Government to allocate 300 million AMD annually for uninterrupted operation of Arpa-Sevan tunnel
The Government of the Republic of Armenia has adopted a decision to allocate 300 million AMD annually to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the Arpa-Sevan tunnel. The decision was approved during the RA Government session held on January 22.
According to the rationale of the decision, the measure is driven by the necessity for a gradual increase in the water level of Lake Sevan and the objective of transferring the maximum possible volume of water to the lake through the tunnel.
Within this framework, the government will extend the term of the trust management agreement concluded with «Arpa-Sevan» OJSC (Open Joint Stock Company) for an additional 4 years, setting the annual funding at 300 million AMD.
The rationale further states that this step will ensure the safe and uninterrupted operation and maintenance of the hydro-junction, the preservation of sanitary conditions within the water system’s exclusion zone, and an increase in Lake Sevan’s water reserves proportional to the volume of water transferred through the hydro-junction.
The management of the Vorotan-Arpa-Sevan hydro-junction water system was handed over to trust management under an agreement signed on August 17, 2004. Its term had previously been extended until December 31, 2025, by a 2023 government decision; however, with today’s decision, it will remain in effect until 2030.
