A public official has been sentenced to imprisonment on charges of torture

The Court of First Instance of Yerevan has issued a guilty verdict and sentenced an employee of the penitentiary institution to 7 years in prison. The individual was charged with torturing defendant A.A. as part of a group on March 16, 2018, within the building of the Ministry of Justice’s “Nubarashen” penitentiary facility, with the intent of punishment.

The prosecutor had requested that the Court recognize A.M., who held the position of senior specialist in the security department of the “Nubarashen” penitentiary facility, guilty under Article 309.1, Part 2, Clause 4 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to the crime of torture committed by public officials or other individuals authorized to act on behalf of the state.

This is the second verdict in Armenia related to the torture article. The first was also connected to Aghajanyan. In the same case, Major Armen Hovhannisyan of the penitentiary institution was sentenced to 7.5 years.
