Pashinyan discusses small modular reactors with IAEA chief

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan met with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Paris. During the meeting, issues related to the development of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes were discussed.

The interlocutors also addressed the progress of cooperation between Armenia and the IAEA. The continuous implementation of programs for ensuring nuclear safety, technical cooperation, and expert support was highlighted.

During the discussion, the parties also exchanged views on projects being implemented in Armenia’s energy sector, small modular reactor (SMR) technologies, and the prospects for nuclear energy development.

It is worth noting that earlier, on February 9, U.S. Vice President JD Vance announced that the United States is ready to supply Armenia with small modular reactors within the framework of a memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.

Commenting on the discussions between Yerevan and Washington regarding nuclear projects, Dmitry Peskov, Press Secretary for the President of Russia, noted that Russia’s experience in the nuclear field is more extensive and the cost of services is more affordable.
