Representatives of Armenia and Turkey have assessed the possibility of opening a railway crossing

Armenia’s envoy and Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Ruben Rubinyan, stated that in November, meetings took place between representatives of various agencies from Armenia and Turkey at the Armenia-Turkey border.

Rubinyan did not provide details about these meetings. He only noted that technical needs were assessed to enable the operation of the Akhurik/Akyaka railway border crossing. The meeting was conducted in a positive and constructive atmosphere.

The land border between Armenia and Turkey has been closed since 1993. However, Armenia-Turkey relations have shown progress in recent years. Negotiations regarding border normalization between two countries have begun. 5ive meetings held between Armenia’s representative Ruben Rubinyan and Serdar Kılıç. During a meeting in the summer, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the normalization process without preconditions.

Additionally, Ararat Mirzoyan emphasized that Armenia has already completed the construction and technical upgrades of the Margara border crossing with Turkey. In July 2022, during the fourth meeting in Vienna, both parties agreed to open the land border for citizens of third countries as soon as possible. However, two years after this agreement, the most recent meeting of the envoys on July 30 did not clarify when this agreement would be implemented.

Ruben Rubinyan noted as early as July 2022 that the success of the Armenia-Turkey negotiation process depends on Ankara’s political will, adding that Armenia has always maintained a constructive approach.
