WC-2026: The Armenian National Team’s Opponents Are Announced
Today, on December 13, the draw for the European qualifiers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup took place in Zurich. Based on the draw results, 12 groups were formed.
The Armenian national team was placed in Group F. Our team will compete against Hungary and Ireland. The winner of the Portugal-Denmark playoff will join as the fourth team in the group.
Armenia is already familiar with its opponents. Among them, Armenian fans are most acquainted with the Danish team. During the 2014 World Cup qualifiers, our team achieved a historic victory, defeating Denmark 4-0 in their own stadium.
The Armenian national team has faced Portugal 6 times. The results are 2 draws, while the European powerhouse claimed victory in all other encounters. Against Hungary, our team has played once, back in 2004, when Hungary won 2-0.
The UEFA group stage qualifiers will start in March 2025 and conclude in November 2025. Only the teams that finish first in their groups will secure direct qualification for the World Cup. The second-placed teams will compete in playoffs. The first qualifying matches in 5 team groups are scheduled for March 21-22, 2025.
It’s worth noting that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be the first in history to be hosted by three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
