15 Historical and Cultural Buildings Granted Monument Status

At the fifth session of the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports’ expert committee this year, 15 historical and cultural structures located in Yerevan and various regions of Armenia were granted monument status. This designation provides legal protection, ensuring the structures are preserved and cannot be damaged, demolished, or altered without the approval of relevant state bodies.

Among the newly designated monuments in Yerevan are the former “Nairi” Cinema building on Mashtots Avenue, the Chekhov Secondary School No. 55 building on Baghramyan Avenue, and the Physics Institute building of the National Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR.

In the Lori region, local monument status was granted to the “Chinese Bookstore” building on Tigran Mets Avenue in Vanadzor, the “Palanduzants” residential house (second half of the 19th century) on Zoravar Andranik Street No. 2, the burial site in Hartagyugh village (3rd–1st millennium BC), and a tombstone from the 15th–17th centuries.

In the Vayots Dzor region, the rock-carved watermill in Chiva village, the settlement of “Vardanes” and its cemetery, cross-stone, and memorial stone received monument status.

In the Kotayk region, the outdoor archaeological site “Nor Geghi-1” in Nor Geghi village.

In the Syunik region, two cross-stones in Kapan city and one in Arajadzor village.

Preservation zone projects were also reviewed for several sites, including the “Tsaghkavank” settlement in Teghenik village, the Karenis Monastery Complex (Monastery of the Apostles Matthew and Andrew) in Karenis village, the bell tower-chapel in Halidzor village in the Syunik region, the Harants Monastery Complex (The Big Desert of Syunik), the Tatev Monastery Complex (The Big Desert of Tatev) in Tatev village, and 30 other monuments.
