The Armenian Apostolic Church Celebrates the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Jesus Christ
The Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates the Feast of the Nativity and Theophany of Jesus Christ on January 6. This holiday commemorates both the birth and baptism of Jesus. It is the first major feast of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
On this day, people greet each other with the phrase, “Christ is born and revealed,” to which the response is, “Blessed is the revelation of Christ, good tidings to us and to you.” The Church emphasizes two key mysteries of this feast: the birth of Christ as the revelation of God and His baptism through the blessing of water. According to Church tradition, Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River on the same date, January 6, thirty years after His birth.
Traditional Christmas dishes play an important role in the celebration. Meals often include foods made from dried fruits and nuts. The festive table typically features rice pilaf with raisins, and fish is considered the main dish of the feast.
The Feast of the Nativity is followed by the Day of Remembrance of the Departed, known as Merelots. On January 7, after the Holy Liturgy, all churches hold a memorial service, after which people visit the graves of their loved ones.
