The Concept for Updating Armenia’s Housing Fund Will Be Beneficial for the State, Citizens, and Developers
In his annual press conference, the Chairman of the Urban Development Committee of Armenia, Yeghiazar Vardanyan, addressed the update of the country’s housing stock, noting that the concept for the renovation of the housing fund is in its final stages of development.
Vardanyan stated that the concept will allow for the update of the country’s housing stock. It will create a safe urban environment and ensure continued activity in the construction sector.
The committee chairman added that there are currently 19,000 multi-apartment buildings in Armenia. 60% of which were built before 1980 according to Soviet standards. According to Vardanyan, even if these buildings are not in a state of emergency, they are outdated and do not meet today’s standards.
During the conference, the chairman clarified that there are frequent requests from citizens who want floor plan solutions that meet today’s requirements, such as having two bathrooms in an apartment, but such changes are often not feasible.
Of the 19,000 multi-apartment buildings, 23% are panel buildings. These sustained significant damage during the Spitak earthquake. The renovation concept is being developed with these factors in mind, encompassing technical, urban planning, legal, and financial systems. It is designed to be beneficial to the state, citizens, and developers, with the aim of minimizing state investment.
