Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan Sees No Willingness from Neighbors to Sign a Peace Agreement
During the panel discussion titled “Together for Peace and Democracy” held in Yerevan, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan addressed the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan, he stated that, with the necessary political will, the process of finalizing the peace agreement could take a very short time.
Speaking about the work being carried out on the peace treaty, Ararat Mirzoyan mentioned that Armenia has undertaken long and arduous efforts to develop a coordinated text of the peace agreement with Azerbaijan.
At the moment, we have 15 articles agreed upon out of the 17 under discussion. On one hand, we can say that the majority of the work has been completed; only 2 articles remain to be agreed upon. On the other hand, of course, the agreement on these articles could still take a considerable amount of time. The solution lies in the demonstration of the necessary political will by both countries. If such political will is displayed, I can assure you that very little time will be needed to finalize the text, – Mirzoyan said.
The foreign minister assured that Armenia has the political will, and Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has repeatedly expressed readiness to finalize and sign the text of the agreement.
Despite Armenia’s readiness, Mirzoyan noted that the same constructive approach and willingness are not being seen from its neighbors. However, according to Mirzoyan, these challenges will not discourage them.
It should be noted that the panel discussion “Together for Peace and Democracy” brought to Armenia speakers and deputy speakers of parliaments from Northern Europe and the Baltic countries. The meeting was attended by Sweden’s Foreign Minister Maria Stenergard, Finland’s Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen, Latvia’s Foreign Minister Baiba Braže, Norway’s Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and representatives of other countries involved in the format.
