Armenia Plans to Build 500 MW Wind Power Plants by 2040

The Armenian government has announced plans to construct wind power plants. It is part of a state-led initiative. By 2040, the country aims to achieve a total wind energy capacity of approximately 500 megawatts.

According to Albert Hovhannisyan, head of the team assessing Armenia’s wind energy potential, specialists are currently conducting measurements in various regions of the country. He explained that wind turbines operate at full capacity with wind speeds of 8-10 m/s, while their measurements indicate an average wind speed of 10-12 m/s in Armenia.

Preliminary estimates suggest that areas with the most favorable wind speeds are located in Syunik, Gegharkunik, and Shirak provinces. Although earlier measurements were carried out by private entities, a new evaluation package is being developed with $1.2 billion in funding from the Asian Development Bank to ensure accuracy.

The studies suggest that the wind power plants could be installed in the Karakhach Pass in the Shirak province. There it would be possible to set up 45-50 turbines. A tender will be announced to select an international company to implement the project.
