Fake Genetic Documents to Evade Conscription: “Medical Genetics Center” Case Goes to Court

The director and two employees of Armenia’s “Center for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Care” will face trial on charges of providing false medical documents to exempt conscripts from military service.

The investigation revealed that the Center’s director, Tamara Sargsyan, the head of the laboratory for the genetics of autoinflammatory diseases, and a doctor-geneticist, who were part of the conscription medical commission, used the blood sample results of another individual, G.H., during the 2021 and 2023 conscriptions and drafted false conclusions based on them. With the help of these documents, conscript S.M., the son of the famous Oshakantsi Gevorik, was deemed unfit for service and evaded conscription.

Furthermore, the same individuals used false data in December 2023 for another conscript, M.P., creating a health status report that also allowed the latter to evade compulsory service.

The Prosecutor General’s Office reports that charges have been filed for official forgery and assisting in evading military service. The case was transferred to the Anti-Corruption Court on November 4.

The preliminary investigation refuted the existence of health problems in the aforementioned conscripts, and M.P. has already been drafted for compulsory military service.
