Masis Community Has a New Head: The Former Head is Under Arrest
Norayr Hakobyan, a member of the opposition “Davit Hambardzumyan Alliance” faction, was elected as the Head of the Masis community during today’s extraordinary session of the Community Council (Avagani). He became the community head by a unanimous vote of the Council’s 15 members. Hakobyan previously served as the First Deputy Head of the community.
The “Civil Contract” faction did not nominate a candidate for the session.
Norayr Hakobyan briefly led the city of Masis for a few months in 2018, at the time when the former community head, Davit Hambardzumyan, was arrested on charges of organizing and committing mass disorder.
It should be recalled that Davit Hambardzumyan was sentenced to 6 years and 3 months of imprisonment on October 23. One day after the verdict, he announced on social networks that the charges were unfounded and that he was not fleeing. On October 28, Hambardzumyan was arrested at “Zvartnots” airport, and on October 31, he announced the termination of his powers as a Council member from “Nubarashen” Penitentiary Institution (PI).
The Local Self-Government (LSG) elections in the enlarged Masis community took place on December 5, 2021. The “Davit Hambardzumyan” Alliance received 14 mandates, and “Civil Contract” received 12 mandates. One member of the Council is unaffiliated.
