Are archbishop Ezras and the KGB connected?

According to information circulating in the press since this morning, a decision has been made within the law enforcement system to arrest Archbishop Ezras Nersisyan, Primate of the Diocese of Russia and New Nakhichevan of the Armenian Apostolic Church, upon his entry into Armenia.

Recently, the National Security Service (NSS) of the RA confirmed that, according to available data, Archbishop Ezras Nersisyan collaborated with the Committee for State Security of the USSR—the KGB—from 1986 to 1988. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan had announced this from the parliamentary rostrum, accusing the brother of Karekin II of being a KGB agent.

According to the NSS, the brother of Catholicos Karekin II currently maintains ties with representatives of foreign intelligence services, which could pose a threat to Armenia’s security and state interests.

“Based on the above, the National Security Service of the RA, within the scope of its legally reserved powers, is taking the necessary measures to prevent and eliminate the mentioned potential threats,” the NSS statement reads.

An example of a declassified document confirming the fact of Archbishop Ezras Nersisyan’s cooperation with the KGB was also presented.
