Local self-government elections to be held in 46 communities in autumn 2026
In the autumn of 2026, local self-government (LSG) elections will be held in 46 communities of Armenia. This was announced by Vahagn Hovakimyan, Chairman of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), during a press conference.
According to him, elections in the communities of Fioletovo and Lermontovo in the Lori region, Ferik in the Armavir region, Arevut, Metsadzor, and Shamiram in the Aragatsotn region, as well as Arzni in the Kotayk region, will be conducted under the majoritarian electoral system.
LSG elections under the proportional electoral system will take place in the regional centers: Artashat, Ashtarak, Armavir, Gavar, Vanadzor, Hrazdan, Kapan, Yeghegnadzor, and Ijevan. Elections under the same system will also be held in the following communities: Aparan, Ararat, Masis, Araks, Baghramyan, Metsamor, Martuni, Sevan, Vardenis, Tumanyan, Spitak, Stepanavan, Pambak, Abovyan, Garni, Tsaghkadzor, Nairi, Nor Hachn, Akhuryan, Amasia, Ashotsq, Artik, Goris, Meghri, Tatev, Tegh, Vayk, Jermuk, Dilijan, and Noyemberyan.
The Central Electoral Commission has set three days for holding the LSG elections: the last Sunday of September, the last Sunday of October, and the last Sunday of November.
The difference between proportional and majoritarian electoral systems lies in the mechanism of election organization and vote counting. In a proportional system, voters cast their ballots for a political party or alliance rather than an individual person, and mandates are distributed according to the proportion of votes received.
In a majoritarian system, voting is cast for a specific candidate, and the person who receives the most votes in the given community or electoral district is considered elected. In this case, the election result is directly linked to the candidate’s person, and the elected official bears more direct responsibility to the voters.
