“Shoghakat” TV company to be liquidated

The Government of the Republic of Armenia (RA) has decided to liquidate the “Spiritual-Cultural Public Television” CJSC, known as Shoghakat TV. The decision was adopted during a regular session of the Government.

According to the Government’s justification, the liquidation of the television company is due to amendments to the Law on “Audiovisual Media,” which were adopted on October 24, 2025. The new edition of the law provides for the restructuring of the public broadcasters’ system and a reduction in their number.

It should be noted that “Shoghakat” TV was established in 2011 by a decision of the RA Government. The powers for managing its shares were reserved for the Council of the Public TV and Radio Company. The television company’s primary mission was the production and broadcasting of spiritual and cultural content.

The legislative amendments adopted by the National Assembly (NA) on October 24 stipulated that the number of public broadcasters should be limited to two. The requirement to mandatorily provide educational and cultural programs was also removed.

At the same time, it is noted that the decision to close the TV company is being made amid deepening tensions in relations between the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin and the RA authorities.
