Communication cut off in Iran; no data on the condition of armenians
Since Friday, there has been no clear information regarding the status of Armenians living in Iran. This was stated by the RA High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Zareh Sinanyan, during a press conference held on January 12.
He emphasized that the main issue is the lack of communication; therefore, at this stage, there is insufficient data to discuss evacuation. Sinanyan noted that sending a working group to Iran is pointless, as it is unclear where and for what purpose it should be sent. In his words, it is first necessary to understand what is happening in the cities where a large number of Armenians reside.
At the same time, it has not been officially clarified whether an attempt was made to establish contact through the RA Embassy in Iran.
Speaking about the situation of Syrian-Armenians, the Commissioner noted that the situation there is chronic and urged compatriots to move to Armenia.
Mass protests have been ongoing in Iran for 15 days now. It is the third day that the internet, as well as telephone communication, has been almost completely shut down in the country.
The mass protest actions began on December 28 against the backdrop of a sharp devaluation of the currency, but they have taken on an anti-government nature. According to the Human Rights Activists News Agency, on January 10, protests continued in Tehran, Shiraz, and Zahedan. The death toll has reached 544.
