Samvel Karapetyan to return to the penitentiary institution
The Anti-Corruption Court of Appeal has overturned the decision on house arrest applied to businessman Samvel Karapetyan. According to the new ruling, he will be transferred back to the penitentiary institution.
On January 5, the Prosecutor’s Office filed an appeal demanding Karapetyan’s detention. On January 12, the court accepted the appeals from both the Prosecutor’s Office and Karapetyan’s defense team for proceedings. January 16 was set as the date for the publication of the decision.
Karapetyan was arrested on June 18, following a search conducted at his home after statements expressing support for the Armenian Apostolic Church. He was charged with tax evasion, money laundering, and public calls aimed at the constitutional order.
On October 13, it became known that the charges against him were amended, with episodes of particularly large-scale money laundering added. On December 30, the court changed his preventive measure; detention was replaced by bail and house arrest, and Karapetyan returned home on the same day.
