Average age of marriage rising in Armenia, divorce rates remain significant

In recent years, men and women in Armenia have been marrying at a later age, while the ratio of marriages to divorces continues to remain at a high level.

Statistics on marriages and divorces in Armenia are compiled based on civil status records obtained from the Civil Status Acts Registry of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Armenia. Based on this data, crude marriage and divorce rates are calculated per 1,000 inhabitants.

Official data shows that the average age at first marriage continues to rise in Armenia. While in 2014, women married for the first time at an average age of 26.3, by 2024, this figure reached 29.1. For men, during the same period, the average age at first marriage rose from 29.4 to 32.6 years.

According to analysts, the overall average age of marriage for women is generally higher than the average age of first-time motherhood. This is due to the fact that marriage registration often occurs after the birth of a child, as well as the presence of second and subsequent marriages, which are registered at an older age.

In 2024, 15,324 marriages and 4,689 divorces were registered in Armenia. The figures indicate that the process of family formation in Armenia is being progressively delayed, yet the divorce rate continues to remain a significant social issue.
