Mother See will no longer be granted land with ownership rights

The National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia (RA) has passed, in the first reading, the bill “On Amending the Land Code of the RA,” according to which the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin will no longer be granted land with the right of gratuitous ownership.

58 deputies voted in favor of the bill, 24 were against, and 3 abstained.

According to the previous Clause 1.2 of Article 64 of the Land Code, land plots belonging to the state and communities could previously be provided to the Armenian Apostolic Church (AAC) with the right of gratuitous ownership for the purpose of construction and maintenance of churches and church-owned structures.

With the new amendment, lands will be provided to the AAC only with the right of use.

According to the justification of the bill, the goal is to ensure a more flexible and controllable land management system without restricting the activities of any organization.
