Lawyer attempted to pass drugs to detained person

A case of drug trafficking in particularly large quantities within a penitentiary institution has been uncovered.

The preliminary investigation revealed that lawyer V.A., serving as the defense counsel for a detainee, met with a relative of the detained person on January 10, 2026, at the latter’s request and illegally acquired various types of drugs packaged in a cigarette box. The lawyer hid them in his briefcase and attempted to transport them to the penitentiary institution; however, the staff of the Penitentiary Service discovered and seized them.

Public criminal prosecution has been initiated against V.A. and D.M. under Article 393, Part 3, Point 2 of the Criminal Code (illegal circulation of narcotics, psychotropic (psychoactive) substances, their preparations, or their equivalents (analogues) or their derivatives for the purpose of sale, or their illegal sale). Regarding the detained person, prosecution was initiated under Article 44-396, Part 3 (attempted illegal circulation of narcotics, psychotropic (psychoactive) substances, their preparations, or their equivalents (analogues) or their derivatives or precursors).

Detention has been applied as a preventive measure against V.A. and D.M.

The criminal proceedings, along with the indictment, have been sent to court.
