A reservoir is being constructed in the village of Khndzoresk
A reservoir with a capacity of 800 m³ is being constructed in the border village of Khndzoresk in the Syunik region. It is designed to irrigate approximately 400 hectares of land in the villages of Khndzoresk and Nerkin Khndzoresk. The reservoir will be supplied with water from the Kurat River. The project is being implemented within the framework of a partnership between the Goris Municipality and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) under the “Improvement of Water Resources Management in Armenia” program.
The operation of the reservoir will provide the opportunity to restore the production of traditional crops and introduce modern agricultural technologies. It is also expected that the reservoir will solve the irrigation water problem in the village. Additionally, it will have an impact on addressing the ongoing issue of drinking water in the area.
The Goris Municipality mentioned that part of the drinking water supply in Khndzoresk is provided by the “Veolia Water” company, the other part by the municipality. During certain times of the year, villagers receive water only in the morning hours, and even then, for only a few hours. As noted by Irina Yolyan, the reason for this policy is to conserve drinking water, as during the season, people use it to irrigate their orchards.
Overall, significant investments have been made in the reconstruction of both drinking water and irrigation pipelines in Khndzoresk. We have also built water collection reservoirs for Khndzoresk through a subsidy program, and a water line approximately 3 km long has been extended from an area called Motik Sar to Khndzoresk. As you can see, numerous projects have been implemented to ensure that drinking water is not used for irrigation purposes. Efforts are also being made to make the community self-sufficient in terms of water resource management.
It is also planned to construct a reservoir before reaching the village.
