At “Goy” Theatre: A Struggle for Existence
From October 28 to 30, the actors and creative team of “Goy” Theatre spent the nights in the theater. The reason was a government decision to merge the theater with the Sundukyan National Academic Theatre.
Sargis Arzumanyan, director and chairman of the board of “Goy” Theatre, stated that the theater’s entrance has been locked since March. The property and space of the theater are being used by the actors of the Sundukyan Theatre.
We were offered a change in our employment contracts to become actors at the Sundukyan Theatre, but we oppose this proposal. As a result, we are unable to access the theater. We have also held a sit-in. An offer was made to provide us with the “Goy” Theatre space on a rental basis, which would operate as an independent theater, a Limited Liability Company (LLC). A program was developed to support independent theaters, which included funding and the allocation of space. However, the allocation of space was later suspended, and only financial support was offered.
We attempted to reach out to the Sundukyan Theatre regarding the situation, but we received no response.
According to government Decision N-701, the space will be allocated to the Sundukyan Theatre. The document has now been submitted to the Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports.
