The Holy Savior Church in Gyumri was reconsecrated

The reconsecration ceremony of the Holy Savior Church in Gyumri was held today by His Holiness Catholicos Garegin II. The fragment of the Savior’s Cross was brought from the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin to Gyumri for the ceremony.

This 150-year-old church, which was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1988, is reopening its doors 36 years after the disaster.

The Catholicos emphasized that the church, which had collapsed due to the earthquake, rose from the ruins thanks to the devout people of the Shirak Diocese and their strong faith. From now on, spiritual services will resume in the church.

After the reconsecration ceremony, a divine liturgy was held.

It is worth recalling that on December 7, 1988, at 11:41 AM, one of the most terrifying disasters in Armenia occurred—the devastating earthquake with a magnitude of over 9. Entire or partial destruction affected Leninakan, Spitak, Kirovakan, Stepanavan, and a total of 21 cities and 324 villages. Official data reported over 25,000 casualties, but the actual number exceeded 35,000. Over 530,000 people were left homeless.
