Police officer featured in scandalous video arrested
Criminal proceedings have been initiated against the police officer depicted in a high-profile video circulated on the internet a few days ago, on charges of apparent violence against a citizen. A decision has been made to arrest him. The Investigative Committee informed Amnews about this.
The agency reports that, based on the report, the case is being examined by the General Department of Investigation of Particularly Important Cases, specifically the unit dealing with torture and cases of abuse or excess of official powers through violence.
Based on the evidence gathered during the preliminary investigation, a public criminal prosecution has been launched against the police officer under Article 450, Part 1 of the Criminal Code. This provision refers to the intentional infliction of severe physical pain or intense mental suffering on a person by an official or at their instruction, for the purpose of extracting information or a confession. If found guilty, the officer faces 4 to 8 years of imprisonment.
The video, which shows the officer swearing and violently slapping a man, was published by journalist Syuzi Badoyan. According to her information, the officer, identified as Hayk Hakobyan, used violence against the father of an alleged suspect to compel the son to report to the police station. According to the journalist, the incident took place four months ago.
The preliminary investigation is ongoing.
