Armenia Seeks New Wheat Supplier: 99% of Wheat Imported from Russia

Armenia’s Minister of Economy, Gevorg Papoyan, has announced efforts to find new wheat suppliers. The minister mentioned that they are negotiating with several countries to diversify wheat imports.

We are looking for alternative sources of imports. This is a normal, logical process. And is not aimed against any country. For instance, if 99% of our wheat came from Romania, I would be negotiating with Russia for imports, – Papoyan stated.

According to the minister, growing wheat in Armenia is not economically viable. Farmers yield about $1,031 worth of product per hectare, with a production cost of around $1,082.

To make production profitable, a subsidy of around $206 per hectare is necessary, – the minister stated.

Russia is Armenia’s primary wheat supplier. According to Armenia’s customs service, 343,600 tons of wheat were imported in 2023, with 99% of it coming from Russia.
