Armenia will be able to reduce the volume of natural gas imports by 6% this year thanks to solar power plants.
Abgar Budaghyan, the head of the USAID program, stated that significant progress has been made in diversifying the energy sector. He highlighted that solar power plants will have a substantial impact on the economy.
This year, solar power plants will generate up to 12% of the electricity produced in Armenia, whereas a few years ago, they were not part of the overall system. As a result, Armenia will be able to reduce natural gas imports by 6% this year, – stated Abgar Budaghyan, head of the USAID Energy Security Program in Armenia.
According to him, by 2050, it is planned to minimize the country’s dependence on gas. Currently, Armenia’s energy independence stands at about 27%, which makes the state and its economy highly vulnerable.
Changes have already been made to the energy strategy for the period up to 2040. The targets for the development of renewable energy for 2030-2040 have been revised. Accordingly, by 2030, the share of renewable energy in Armenia’s electricity production is planned to reach 50%. This will be made possible through the construction of solar power plants with a capacity of about 1,000 megawatts.
Budaghyan added that from 2040, this figure is planned to increase to 60% through the construction of additional solar power plants with a capacity of 500 megawatts and wind power plants with a capacity of 500 megawatts.
