Export of Coregonus Roe from Armenia to the EAEU and Other Countries Banned for Another 6 Months

During the government meeting on December 27, a new decision was made regarding the export of coregonus roe. Starting from January 2, 2025, the export of coregonus roe from Armenia to the EAEU and other countries has been banned for another 6 months.

The main reason for the decision is based on Armenia’s food security concerns, as well as the need to ensure sustainable use of resources in Lake Sevan and preserve biodiversity.

After the regulation of coregonus fishing in Lake Sevan, an increase in the coregonus biomass has been observed. This allows for the continuation of coregonus fishing in the lake. The decision must be notified to the Eurasian Economic Commission at least 3 calendar days before it comes into effect.

The export ban on coregonus roe from Armenia was previously imposed for another 6 months starting from July 2 of this year. Meanwhile, the government bans coregonus fishing every year during the spawning season, which occurs in December–January. In previous years, coregonus fishing was completely banned. While in 2020 and 2021, permission was granted to individuals for coregonus fishing, today, the state grants this right only to legal entities, including individual entrepreneurs and organizations.

In 2022, a total of 600 tons of coregonus was allowed to be caught from Lake Sevan. About 555 tons had already been caught by December 1. From December 15, 2022, to January 20, 2023, a strict ban on coregonus fishing was imposed due to the spawning season.
