A Medical Emergency Response Team to be established in Armenia

The Government of the Republic of Armenia has adopted a new decision to establish a Medical Emergency Response Team (MERT). The team is intended to provide medical assistance to citizens affected by emergencies within the territory of Armenia, as well as to be involved in international humanitarian missions.

According to the decision, the group must be self-sufficient—equipped with personnel, equipment, food, and other necessary resources—to be able to provide immediate medical care and services in any location.

The funds necessary for the MERT’s activities will be provided from the RA state budget through the Ministry of Health’s balance sheet, while costs will increase in the case of international missions.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs will be the co-executor of this initiative along with the Ministry of Health.

In order to provide the appropriate legal framework for the creation of the emergency response team, the RA Ministry of Health has submitted a draft of additions and amendments to the Law “On Medical Care and Services for the Population” to the National Assembly.
