Whitefish fishing ban to be lifted from February 1
The ban on whitefish (sig) fishing remains in effect until February 1. Until then, supervision is being carried out not only in the waters of Lake Sevan but also on the highways.
As a result of measures implemented in recent days, several discoveries have been recorded, including cases of concealed transportation of illegally caught fish.
On January 22, around 10:30, water patrols in the Gegharkunik region stopped a “VAZ-21213” car driven by a resident of Noratus village on the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan highway. Seventy-four whitefish, with a total weight of about 40 kilograms, were found under the hood of the car’s engine. The driver and the vehicle were taken to the Sevan Department of the Community Police.
Another case of transporting illegally caught whitefish was uncovered on the night of January 28. A “GAZ” tow truck transporting an “Opel” car was stopped on the Tsovagyugh-Shorzha-Vardenis road. In the cabin of the latter, 230 kilograms of whitefish were found. A 42-year-old passenger, a resident of Tsovagyugh, stated that he had acquired the fish near Mets Masrik.
On the same night, water patrols noticed parked “Hyundai” and “Opel” cars on the Yerevan-Sevan-Ijevan road. Upon noticing the patrols, the vehicles fled the scene, leaving behind boxes filled with whitefish. The total weight of the discovered fish was 120 kilograms.
Illegally caught whitefish was also found in other cities. On the night of January 25, in the city of Hrazdan, in the area of the Old Market, patrols of the Kotayk region stopped an “Opel” car. A 31-year-old resident of Noratus village presented 462 whitefish with a total weight of 182 kilograms, claiming he had bought them from an unknown person near Chkalovka village.
On January 29, an alert was received regarding the sale of whitefish in the Avan administrative district of the capital. Officers discovered three boxes of fish; 135 whitefish with a total weight of 48 kilograms were seized.
In total, 791 whitefish weighing about 520 kilograms were discovered.
