Spiritual Leader of Surb Gevorg Church of Mughni, Father Garegin Arsenyan, Has Been Released
Father Garegin Arsenyan, the spiritual leader of the Surb Gevorg (Saint George) Church of Mughni and the chancellor (Divanapet) of the Aragatsotn Diocese, has been released from the penitentiary institution. The information was reported by his defender, Petros Petrosyan.
According to the lawyer, the Court of Appeals partially granted the appeal, and Arsenyan was placed under house arrest for two months.
“We will do everything to achieve an acquittal verdict, as there is no evidence to substantiate the charges brought against him,” the defender noted.
It should be recalled that on October 15, law enforcement officers searched the house of the Primate of the Aragatsotn Diocese, Bishop Mkrtich Proshyan, and detained several priests and employees of the diocese. The Investigative Committee later reported that three people were arrested, including the Diocesan Primate.
The criminal proceedings were initiated based on statements made on Public Television by Aragatsotn Diocese priest Aram Asatryan, according to which the Diocesan Primate allegedly forced priests to participate in opposition protests in 2021.
