On December 8, 9, and 10, preliminary elections for the acting mayor of Gyumri will be held in Gyumri. The names of the participating candidates were announced by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a meeting of the board of the “Civil Contract” party.
The candidates for the position of acting mayor are Levon Ananyan, Davit Arushanyan, Shavarsh Aramyan, Emma Barseghyan, Sarik Minasyan, Vahagn Mkrtchyan, and Karen Sarukhanyan. The candidate receiving the most votes in the preliminary elections will be appointed as the acting mayor of Gyumri by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. However, the voting process has not yet been disclosed.
Gyumri has been without a mayor for over a month. In October, 14 members of the Gyumri City Council from the “Balasanyan Alliance” resigned from their mandates, including Mayor Vardges Samsonyan.
After Samsonyan’s resignation, Sarukhanyan was considered the main candidate of the Civil Contract Party. However, his candidacy was initially withdrawn due to a drug-related controversy, now his candidacy has been reconsidered.
