France has a new Prime Minister
François Bayrou, leader of the centrist “Democratic Movement” party, has been appointed as the new Prime Minister of France. French President Emmanuel Macron has tasked him with forming a government. This was reported by the Élysée Palace.
The new Prime Minister of France is 73 years old. He has been a long-time supporter of Macron.
From 1993 to 1997, Bayrou served as Minister of Education. In 2017 he briefly headed the Ministry of Justice. He was a candidate in the 2002, 2007, and 2012 presidential elections. His party is part of the “Together” political coalition.
The French National Assembly had expressed no confidence in Michel Barnier’s government. Of the 574 deputies, 331 voted in favor of the no-confidence motion. Barnier faced a no-confidence vote because he approved next year’s budget without a parliamentary vote. On December 5, the presidency announced that Barnier had resigned from his position.
