The United States and the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on high-ranking officials of the Georgian government

The United States and the United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on high-ranking Georgian government officials in response to the suppression of protesters in Georgia.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that the sanctions would freeze any assets held by Georgian officials in the United States and block most of their financial transactions.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated, “The United States strongly condemns the continued, harsh, and unjustified violence by Georgian authorities against its citizens, including peaceful protesters, media representatives, human rights defenders, and opposition figures.”

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy called the authorities’ response to the protests a “blatant attack on democracy and the Georgian people’s rights.”

Protesters in Georgia took to the streets to reject the government’s decision to postpone the process of joining the European Union until 2028, a move many in the country see as aligning Georgia closer to Russia.
