Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Announces Resignation After 9 Years in Office
On January 6, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his resignation from office. This was reported by BBC. Trudeau not only announced his resignation from the position of Prime Minister but also from the leadership of his Liberal Party. He has been Canada’s Prime Minister since 2016.
Liberal Party President Sachit Mehran stated that the party’s board of directors would meet next week to begin the process of selecting a new leader.
The party had been urging Trudeau to step down after Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland unexpectedly resigned in December, accusing Trudeau of failing to take adequate action regarding the statements of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump had promised to impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from Canada after his inauguration on January 20. This could significantly damage Canada’s economy.
