Draft Proposal on Launching EU Membership Discussed in Parliament

The National Assembly is currently discussing the legislative initiative for launching the process of Armenia’s membership in the European Union, referred to as the “Eurovote” initiative. The main rapporteur is Artak Zeynalyan, who is also presenting the proposal. Representatives of non-parliamentary forces supporting the initiative are also attending the session.

The National Assembly’s Expert Department has deemed the proposal problematic in terms of legal clarity and compliance with established procedures for joining supranational international organizations, as well as the requirements of the Law on “Normative Legal Acts.”

On January 23, during the Davos summit, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that it is highly likely the National Assembly will adopt the legislative initiative on launching the EU membership process.

On January 9, the Armenian government approved the draft law to initiate the process of Armenia’s accession to the European Union. The draft law could be discussed in the National Assembly if more than 50,000 signatures were collected. Between July 22 and November 2024, the initiators gathered over 60,000 signatures.
