The President of Abkhazia has resigned

The President of Abkhazia, Aslan Bzhania, has resigned following negotiations between the republicans and the opposition that began on November 18. An agreement was signed between the two sides, stipulating that protesters gathered inside the country and around the government building must disperse immediately after the president’s resignation. If the protesters do not vacate the Abkhazian government building, Bzhania will retract his resignation.

Vice President Badr Gunba has been appointed as Acting President of Abkhazia.

Tensions have been high in Abkhazia since November 15. The cause was an agreement signed on October 30 between the governments of Russia and Abkhazia, allowing Russian companies to implement investment projects in Abkhazia. Lawmakers did not even manage to approve the agenda. The country saw mass protests during which several people were injured. The clashes escalated to the government building. Protesters, along with the opposition, demanded the president’s resignation.
