Sahak II Mashalian proposes the creation of a synodal structure
The Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople has announced that the Armenian Patriarch of Turkey, Sahak II Mashalian, proposed the formation of a synodal structure during the Assembly of Bishops convened in Austria, aimed at strengthening the position of Karekin II and supporting the administration of the Mother See.
According to the Patriarch, convening an Assembly of Bishops outside the Mother See already testifies to the existing problem. He noted that the anti-Catholicos political campaign is more visible in the Diaspora, under which conditions it is necessary to ensure ecclesiastical discipline and maintain composure.
Mashalian emphasized that the only pan-church body authorized to re-verify the status of the Catholicos is the National-Ecclesiastical Assembly, and it is necessary to clarify the timing of its convocation.
He also proposed that the Assembly of Bishops elect twelve senior bishops to support the Supreme Patriarch in the administration of the Mother See during this period. According to the Patriarch’s assessment, hasty decisions could deepen the existing contradictions.
“In this period, the Supreme Patriarch needs an authoritative collegiality that will inspire composure and prudence; that is synodality, involving some opposition brothers in its composition as well. This synodal provision can prepare the ground for seeking and finding a way out with the government. Establishing such a structure has always been in the Supreme Patriarch’s mind, I know personally, but this idea has never been realized,” he stated.
As a reminder, the Assembly of Bishops took place on February 18 in St. Pölten, Austria, while the Catholicos of All Armenians participated remotely.
