A four-year program will be developed to improve air pollution in Yerevan

Last week, Yerevan residents responded to the city’s air pollution issue on social media. Air pollution levels in the capital exceeded the World Health Organization’s standards by 5–7 times.

The City Hall’s “Air Pollution Levels by Dust Particles” platform shows that dust levels have increased in all administrative districts of the city.

The air is considered unhealthy both for sensitive groups and for individuals without any pre-existing health issues.

Today, on December 16, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan proposed a solution to address this problem.

Avinyan instructed the development of a four-year program detailing the measures the municipality should take to improve air quality.

Avinayan tasked Gorik Avetisyan, Deputy Head of the Environmental Department, with presenting the program within the next 2 months. The program will include initiatives such as afforestation, tree planting, and banning the use of outdated vehicles.

During the operational meeting, Avinyan also noted that 149 air quality monitoring devices have been installed throughout the city. These devices provide real-time data on air quality. According to the mayor, while these measurements are particularly concerning during the winter months, the municipality is ready to take steps to monitor and improve the situation.
