New Orchards Are Being Established in Berkaber and Khashtarak Settlements

Home gardens in the Berkaber and Khashtarak settlements of the Ijevan community are being planted with cornelian cherry and pomegranate trees. This was announced by the Tavush Regional Administration. A total of 87 beneficiaries are participating in the program. 43 residents from Berkaber and 44 from Khashtarak.

In Berkaber, drip irrigation systems have been installed, and the orchard planting has been completed. In Khashtarak, the work is still underway, with efforts focused on fully implementing the drip irrigation system.

The program will also provide beneficiaries with free electric hand sprayers. Additionally, “agrospan” agricultural fabrics are being installed in the spaces between trees to combat weeds and regulate the moisture levels of the trees’ root systems. These fabrics improve growth conditions and protect the plants by preventing extreme nighttime cold and daytime overheating. They also reduce surface evaporation from the soil, retain moisture, and decrease the frequency of irrigation.

Horticultural initiatives are being carried out in almost all regions of Armenia, with a particular focus on the development of vineyards and fruit orchards, especially in the Ararat, Armavir, and Vayots Dzor regions, which are traditionally leading producers of grapes and fruits.

The program was adopted in 2023 by a government decision.
