Pressure on journalists has increased

In 2025, pressure against journalists and the media in Armenia’s news landscape significantly increased.

According to the Committee to Protect Freedom of Expression (CPFE), 224 violations were recorded during the year, exceeding the figure of 208 in 2024. Specifically, there were 15 cases of physical violence, 108 other forms of pressure, and 101 cases where the right to receive and disseminate information was violated.

The increase was particularly noticeable during the escalation of the socio-political situation, specifically in the coverage of conflicts between the government and the church, as well as between the government and the opposition.

In such a tense environment, preparing news reports in accordance with professional principles became more difficult, which negatively impacted public trust in the media.

Furthermore, the number of court cases against journalists has risen sharply. In 2025, 63 new lawsuits were filed, 31 of which were initiated by state bodies or officials. These legal claims were based on allegations of insult, defamation, and the protection of copyright.
