Sale of polyethylene bags to be banned starting from 2027

Starting from January 1, 2027, the sale and availability of polyethylene sacks and bags, as well as single-use containers and tableware made of plastic and expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam), will be banned in Armenia. The National Assembly has passed the corresponding package of legislative amendments in the first reading.

The bill on making amendments and additions to the Law “On Trade and Services” and related laws was presented to the parliament by the Deputy Minister of Environment, Ara Mkrtchyan.

According to the project, the ban will apply to trade objects, public catering points, fairs, exhibition-sales, as well as outdoor and mobile trade outlets.

At the same time, exceptions are defined: the ban will not apply to bags used for weighing and packaging, trash bags produced from secondary raw materials, or containers with lids used for weighing and packaging purposes.

In case of violation of the law, the economic entity will receive a warning for the first offense, followed by a fine ranging from 100,000 to 150,000 AMD.

Supervision will be carried out by local self-government bodies and the Market Surveillance Inspection Body through a joint format and monitoring mechanism.

According to Minister Mkrtchyan, the initiative will allow Armenia to present itself as a state committed to development principles, as it will be adopted on the threshold of COP-17.
