The 38th anniversary of the Sumgait pogroms
Today marks the 38th anniversary of the 1988 Sumgait pogroms.
On February 27, 1988, violence against the Armenian population of the city of Sumgait began at the initiative and with the connivance of the leadership of Soviet Azerbaijan.
The pogroms were accompanied by atrocities and mass violations of human rights. Thousands of Armenians were killed, including women, children, and the elderly.
The Sumgait tragedy was followed by violence against Armenians in Kirovabad, Baku, and other settlements in Azerbaijan. As a result of these events, around 500,000 ethnic Armenians were forcibly displaced from Soviet Azerbaijan.
On the occasion of the 38th anniversary of the memory of the victims of the Sumgait pogroms, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia issued a statement, paying tribute to the memory of hundreds of Armenians.
The U.S. Embassy in Armenia also made a post on the occasion of the Remembrance Day, stating: “Today, we join Armenians in mourning and paying tribute to the memory of those who fell victim in Sumgait in 1988.”
