Armenian environmentalists held a protest in front of the UN office in Yerevan

The “Climate Justice for Armenia” initiative and Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg held a protest in front of the UN office in Yerevan in connection with the COP29 climate conference taking place in Azerbaijan. The slogan of the protest was “Stop Greenwashing Genocide!”

The participants’ speeches mainly focused on the release of Armenian captives, the ethnic cleansing carried out in Artsakh, and related issues. Greta Thunberg also delivered a separate speech, condemning Azerbaijan’s actions. In a press briefing with journalists, the Swedish eco-activist stated that she plans to participate in COP16, which will be held in Armenia in 2026.

At the end of the protest, participants painted their hands red and used them to mark a poster. They then delivered a signed letter to the UN office. In the letter, they addressed the ethnic cleansing carried out by Azerbaijan in Artsakh, the destruction of cultural heritage, and ecological crimes, demanding that the UN hold Azerbaijan accountable.

Eco-activist Greta Thunberg refused to travel to Azerbaijan to participate in COP29. She has been in Armenia for several days now. Yesterday, she visited the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial Complex․
