It has been proposed to restrict the sale of energy drinks to teenagers
A group of parliamentarians in Armenia has proposed banning the sale of energy drinks to individuals under the age of 18. They have also suggested prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages and energy drinks through vending machines and other technical means, as well as restricting their advertisement and more.
According to the Ministry of Health, approximately 40% of teenagers consume energy drinks. These drinks contain high amounts of caffeine, sugar, and other ingredients that may pose health risks. Common issues among energy drink enthusiasts include insomnia, gastritis, nervous disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and more.
According to the parliamentarian, the proposed bill not only addresses energy drinks but also fills existing legislative gaps concerning the sale of alcoholic beverages. Under current legislation, there is administrative liability for selling alcohol to individuals under 18; however, the “Trade and Services” law does not impose a ban on selling alcoholic beverages to minors.
The committee has approved a package of amendments to the “Trade and Services” law.
However, such laws are continuously discussed in Armenia, yet it is rare for shops to ask for identification when selling cigarettes or alcoholic beverages.
