Armenian boxing team achieves historic success in Dubai

The IBA Boxing World Championship has concluded in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The Armenian national boxing team won a historic five bronze medals. This was reported by the Boxing Federation of Armenia.

In the semi-final, Garboyan lost 0:5 to Uzbekistan’s representative Hasanboy Dusmatov. Bazeyan lost by the same score to another representative of Uzbekistan, Abumalik Khalukov. Bachkov competed with Russia’s representative Evgeny Kulers and lost with a score of 5:2. Olympic Games bronze medalist and four-time European Champion Hovhannes Bachkov became a World Championship bronze medalist for the 5th time in his career. In the 86 kg weight category semi-final, Rafael Hovhannisyan measured his strength against Aliaksei Alfiorau, representing Belarus, and was defeated by his opponent. Armenia’s last representative, 2021 World Vice-Champion Davit Chaloyan, also lost to Uzbekistan’s representative Arman Makhanov in the super heavyweight semi-final of the World Championship.

The Armenian national team had never won this many medals at a World Championship before. 14 boxers participated in the championship as part of the team.

428 boxers from 108 countries took part in the World Championship. The Armenian delegation also included representatives of the coaching and management staff, including the national team’s head coach Rudik Mkrtchyan and the President of the Federation Hovhannes Hovsepyan.

The IBA Boxing World Championship was held from December 2 to 13.
