The Armenia-Ukraine sporting scandal continues: Football Federation of Armenia sends a letter to UEFA

The scandal that arose following the Armenia-Ukraine match in the final stage of the European Futsal Championship continues to be a subject of extensive discussion.

Prior to the match held on January 22 in Kaunas, Lithuania, Ukrainian players refused to shake hands with members of the Armenian national team who also compete in the Russian Federation’s championship. During the game, Ukrainian fans exhibited provocative behavior, shouting offensive chants and making inappropriate gestures.

The match concluded with a 2-1 victory for the Armenian national futsal team. It is worth noting that the Ukrainian national team is the bronze medalist of the 2024 World Cup.

After the match, Armenian national team player Denis Nevedrov made a post on his Instagram page, following which the Ukrainian side submitted a complaint to UEFA. The complaint states that the futsal player, who plays for the Russian club “Tyumen,” made offensive remarks toward Ukraine and Ukrainians after the victory and also posted offensive emojis on social media.

In response to these publications, the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA) has also sent a letter to UEFA, presenting its observations. According to the Federation, the Ukrainian side’s complaint is baseless, and the presented facts do not correspond to reality. The FFA stated that additional details will be released in the near future.

In Group B of the Euro 2026 qualifying round, the Armenian national team, led by Ruben Nazaretyan, will play its next match on January 25 at 16:00 Yerevan time. The team’s next opponent is the Czech Republic selection. In the third round of the group stage, on January 28, Armenia will compete against the Lithuanian national team.
