
Armenia’s Men’s Chess Team Named the Best Team of FIDE’s Centennial Anniversary
Recently recognized as the “Team of the Year” at the “Best in Sports” competition organized by Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports, Armenia’s men’s chess team has also been honored by FIDE as the best team of its 100th anniversary.
In the World Junior Chess Championship held in India from June 1 to 14, Grandmaster Emin Ohanyan and Women’s International Master Mariam Mkrtchyan both became silver medalists.
From June 20 to 28, at the European U18 Team Chess Championship in Greece, the Armenian team also secured the silver medal. The team included Emin Ohanyan, Arsen Davtyan, Robert Piliposyan, Erik Gasparyan, and Benik Agasarov.
From July 19 to 28, at the World Individual Chess Championship for Players with Disabilities hosted in Armenia, FIDE Master Sargis Sargsyan won the bronze medal. On August 17 and 18, at the European Junior Rapid Chess Championship in the Czech Republic, FIDE Master Alex Sahakyan became the U18 champion, while Sofia Baghramyan won bronze in the U8 girls’ category.
At the European Junior Blitz Chess Championship, held from August 19 to 20 in the Czech Republic, Sona Krkyasharyan became the U14 girls’ champion, and Sofia Baghramyan won gold in the U8 girls’ category. At the European Junior Chess Championship from August 22 to 31 in the Czech Republic, International Master Arsen Davtyan became the U18 silver medalist, FIDE Master Benik Agasarov secured silver in the U16 category, and Candidate Master Tigran Hambardzumyan became the U12 silver medalist.
At the 45th Chess Olympiad, held in Hungary from September 10 to 23, Armenia’s men’s team shared 2nd-6th places, while the women’s team ranked 3rd-6th. Grandmaster Elina Danielyan and International Master Anna Sargsyan won bronze medals on the 3rd and 4th boards, respectively.
Finally, at the European Individual Chess Championship held in Montenegro from November 7 to 20, Grandmaster Robert Hovhannisyan secured a qualification spot for the Chess World Cup.
