Brother of Catholicos of All Armenians, Gevorg Nersisyan, Arrested
A court has arrested for one month one of the participants in the Voskehat incident—according to media reports, Gevorg Nersisyan, the brother of the Catholicos of All Armenians. He and his son are accused of obstructing campaigning for the Vagharshapat City Council elections, but relatives deny the charges.
Gevorg Nersisyan and his son are accused of obstructing the campaigning of Harutyun Mkrtchyan, a candidate from the “Hanrapetutyun” (Republic) party, in Voskehat on November 1, around 16:10. A criminal case was initiated under Part 2 of Article 211 of the RA Criminal Code (Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia) for compelling or obstructing campaigning or the refusal to campaign.
The court granted the motion of the Investigative Committee, but lawyer Ara Zohrabyan and Nersisyan’s relatives deny the charges, stating that no such incident occurred. Zohrabyan published a video which, according to him, proves that there was no obstruction.
Given the sensitivity of the case, the issue of arresting Gevorg Nersisyan’s son is still being discussed in court, and additional procedural steps are ongoing.
