A Street in Yerevan to be Named After Vladimir Yengibaryan
The Yerevan Council of Elders has decided to name Noragavit 1st Street and its five dead-ends, located in the Shengavit administrative district, after the multiple USSR champion and Olympic champion Vladimir Yengibaryan. The decision was made during the 3rd session of the 5th convocation of the Council of Elders.
Henceforth, this street and its dead-ends will be called “Vladimir Yengibaryan Street,” “Vladimir Yengibaryan Street, 1st Dead-End,” “… 2nd Dead-End,” “… 3rd Dead-End,” “… 4th Dead-End,” and “… 5th Dead-End.
“Vladimir Yengibaryan (1932–2013) is one of the most famous Armenian boxers. At the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, he became the second Olympic champion in boxing in the history of the USSR and the first in the entire region. During his career, he participated in 267 bouts, winning 255 of them and never suffering a knockdown.
After concluding his sports career, Yengibaryan founded the first republican boxing school of the USSR in Yerevan and headed it for more than 30 years. He later worked in Los Angeles, training numerous young Armenian athletes.
He died in 2013 and is buried in the Yerevan City Pantheon.
