Export of whitefish caviar from Armenia to be suspended for six months starting January 2, 2026
Starting from January 2, 2026, the export of whitefish caviar from Armenia will be suspended for a period of six months. The relevant decision was adopted during today’s session of the Government of the Republic of Armenia (RA).
According to the Government’s justification, the necessity of the decision is driven by the requirements of ensuring the food security of the RA, the sustainable use of bio-resources in Lake Sevan, and the preservation of biodiversity.
It is noted that despite the increase in whitefish biomass in recent years, the current trend does not yet ensure the natural growth and optimal population of the wild fish species in the lake. According to some scientific assessments, the total stock of whitefish should reach up to 10,000 tons, while the volume of industrial fishing should be around 2,000 tons or more.
To ensure the natural reproduction of whitefish in Lake Sevan, a comprehensive set of strengthened measures is implemented every year from late November to February of the following year to exclude illegal fishing during the whitefish fishing ban.
The export ban established by the Government decision also aims to prevent the potential negative impacts of exporting whitefish caviar, which holds high value in the international market.
